Plumber in Isle of Hope, GA

Isle of Hope at a glance

Isle of Hope is a census-designated place of 2,357 people (2020 census) southeast of Savannah, an island surrounded by water at high tide. It is known for its historic plantations and waterfront homes.

What that means for your plumbing

Several homes from before the Civil War still stand, including an 1820 caretaker's cottage. Houses that old have had plumbing added and replaced many times, often with a mix of pipe types. Repiping a historic home takes careful planning around plaster and trim; see repiping.

Waterfront living

Homes on the bluff and along the Intracoastal Waterway face salt air and storm surge. Keep water heaters and equipment raised where you can, and have a plan to shut off water and gas before a storm. See hurricane-season plumbing.

Wormsloe and Noble Jones

In 1736 Noble Jones received a grant on the island for land that became Wormsloe, and the fortified tabby house he built at the Skidaway Narrows can still be visited. Today the Wormsloe State Historic Site protects 822 acres, including a 1.5-mile avenue lined with live oaks. The island became a summer retreat for Savannahians escaping yellow fever epidemics before turning into a year-round community in the early 20th century. Old oaks and old sewer lines don't mix well; if roots keep returning, see drain cleaning.
