Plumber in Thunderbolt, GA

Thunderbolt at a glance

Thunderbolt is a town of 2,556 people (2020 census) about five miles southeast of downtown Savannah, on the western shore of the Wilmington River, part of the Intracoastal Waterway. It's known for its shrimp docks and seafood restaurants.

What that means for your plumbing

Docks, boat washes and outdoor sinks all need water, and salt air corrodes fittings. Outdoor faucets and lines near the water should be checked each spring. See outdoor plumbing.

Renters and older homes

The census found more than a third of Thunderbolt households were people living alone, and plenty of homes here are older. Older galvanized or cast-iron pipe is common in towns of this age; brown water or falling pressure are signs. See repiping.

From Warsaw to Thunderbolt

The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the town as Warsaw in 1856, and by coincidence Casimir Pulaski, who was born in Warsaw, Poland, died in Thunderbolt. The legislature changed the name to Thunderbolt in 1921; tradition says a lightning strike opened a spring here. Fort Thunderbolt was built to protect Savannah from Union forces coming from Whitemarsh Island. Homes near the waterfront that date from the town's older decades can have long-serving sewer laterals; if drains back up at high water or in storms, read about sewer line repair.
