Should I Repair or Replace My Water Heater?
If the tank itself leaks or the heater is past ten years and failing, replacement usually makes more sense. Thermostats, elements, valves and igniters can be repaired on younger units.
Request a plumberHow old is it?
Read the serial number on the rating label. Many makers put the year in the first digits.
What's failing?
A thermostat, heating element, gas valve or relief valve is a repair. A leak from the tank body means replacement.
Where is it?
An old tank in an attic or upstairs closet is a bigger risk than one in a garage, because a failure damages living space below.
Is it big enough?
If the household has grown, a larger tank or a different type may be better than repairing the old one.
Tank or tankless?
Tankless units save space and heat on demand, but can need a bigger gas line or new venting. Ask for both options in the quote.
Next step
See water heater repair and replacement, or send a request and a plumber will go over the choices.
What about energy use?
Older tanks lose heat through the walls and may need more energy to keep water hot. Newer models are better insulated, and heat pump units can cut running costs further where there's room for them.
Can I make a new one last longer?
Drain a few gallons once a year to clear sediment, keep the area dry and have the relief valve checked.
Safety checks
Whatever you choose, the temperature and pressure relief valve must work and its pipe must point toward the floor. Gas units need a clear vent. A plumber checks both on every visit.
